Acupuncture

Dr. Bridget Early has integrated the practice of medical acupuncture into her family medicine practice. She has studied medical acupuncture since 2003 and is a member of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture. She completed further training in China in 2007, and continues to train and refine her skills every year.

Karin Rossi, R.N., has also studied acupuncture and is certified by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association to provide ear acupuncture to assist in recovery and behavioral health.

Acupuncture does not replace standard, Western medicine, but it can be a useful alternative for many problems.  If you are diagnosed with strep throat, we will most likely prescribe antibiotics, Western-style.  If you have a chronic problem such as asthma or joint pain, and the various methods of treating this condition through Western medicine do not seem to be working, have the significant expense or potentially serious side effects, then acupuncture is a good alternative.  It is also very helpful for acute or chronic musculoskeletal problems such as back pain.

The needles are hair-thin, and you don’t have to look at them!  A skilled practitioner inserts the needles so that you may not even feel them going in.  Once the needles are inserted into the appropriate key points, you rest in a quiet, dim room for a while and let your body adjust to the changes the needles facilitate.  Patients have said, “I could feel the muscles in my shoulder start to jerk after a few minutes, and then they eased up and it felt so much better!”  Some patients feel immediate relief; others feel changes in their bodies hours later, or even the next day.  Acupuncture does not work for every patient, every time, but some patients swear by it.

Most private health insurance, and Medicare and Medicaid, do not currently cover acupuncture treatments.  If you are interested, ask our office about payment plans, and check your insurer for coverage requirements.

Breastfeeding Support

Namaste Health Care encourages and supports families who commit to breastfeeding their babies. “Research has shown that there is not better food than breast milk for a baby’s first year of life. Breastfeeding provides many health, nutritional, economical, and emotional benefits to mother and baby.”[1]

[1] USDA Food & Nutrition Service,  7/7/2011

As an example of the amazing natural benefits of breastfeeding, consider the natural disease protection provided by breast milk. If a baby catches a germ, the baby passes a little of it into the mother through nursing, and the mother returns to the baby, in her milk, the correct antibodies for that germ from her own system at the next breastfeeding. It’s really an astounding system.

Our providers, in particular Kate Branham and Dr McCray, have extensive experience helping new moms with the “tricks of the trade” that make it work much more smoothly for mother and baby.

Medication-Assisted Treatment for Substance Use Disorders

Dr. Early, although primarily a Family Medicine physician, is also board certified in Addiction Medicine. At Namaste, we are able to offer medication and support for alcohol- or drug-dependent people seeking recovery.

Dr Early, Dr McCray, and Kate Branham have all received the training in Medication Assisted Treatment that allows them to prescribe buprenorphine medications for patients in recovery from opioid dependence. Originally only available under the brand name Suboxone, buprenorphine is now available in generic forms and as several other slight variants under different brand names. Patients on buprenorphine are held to a higher standard of supervision by the DEA, which issues a special limited license for providers.

Our providers also work with patients in recovery from alcohol, methamphetamines, and other addictions.

Medication is only one of the tools to assist in recovery.  We are committed to providing comprehensive patient-centered care. Namaste’s recovery program includes regular group meetings where patients can help support each other in the issues than can arise during recovery.  We strongly support recovery programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Celebrate Recovery, and can help patients find support that truly fits them and their needs. We facilitate referrals to specialists and therapists if needed. If residential treatment is necessary to jump-start a patient’s recovery, we can help arrange that.
